How many times I have heard people say that life in the Old Testament must have been so much harder because of all the old laws. Life may have been harder in ways but not due to the laws themselves. We know that Jesus clarified the law and the prophets and in his clarity he fulfills them.

This Sunday we have the third installment on the great Sermon on the Mount from Matthew 5 – 7. As my friend Fr. Gaurav Shroff instructed our parish a couple of weeks ago, “Read all of Matthew 5 – 7 in a sitting”.

One gal excitedly told me upon getting out of her car this evening for the vigil Mass, “Deacon, I read that whole Sermon on the Mount. And boy O’ boy did it challenge me!”

We learn how we should deal with:

  • Anger

  • Occasions of Impurity

  • Divorce

  • On Oaths

If we really love the Lord, what happens, as St. Paul reminds us, “What eye has not seen, and ear has not heard, and what has not entered the human heart, what God has prepared for this who love him, this God has revealed to us through the Spirit.”
